Shop Local starts early in the midcoast

ROCKLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- There may have been crowds at the malls and big box stores, but local downtowns had some crowds of their own...and are hoping for more.

There's a nationwide push again this year for "Shop Local Saturday." At businesses like Planet Toys in Rockland, they say shopping local is what they're all about. And while the downtown stores weren't open at midnight, there were still shoppers getting an early start on gift-buying. Main Street business owners and managers say a healthy Christmas shopping season crucial for them to have the income to keep the doors open until summer, when the tourists come back.

Sussman gives $1 million for new hospice

ROCKPORT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- One of Maine's best known political donors is giving to help families in Knox County. Donald Sussman, husband of Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, has donated a million dollars to help build a new hospice house at Pen Bay Hospital in Rockport.

Sussman and Pingree visited the construction site Monday, along with several dozen hospice staff and volunteers. The house will have space for seven patients, whose medical needs can't be handled at home. It will be named in honor of Sussman's grandmother, who he says came to America from Russia in 1905.

Sussman says most of his philanthropy is anonymous, but says he was happy to make this gift public because, "This is our community this is where we live. We love being part of it."

CAMDEN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A former basketball coach in the Islesboro school system has pleaded not guilty to 16 counts of gross sexual assault -- among other charges.

Travis Tatro, 30, was arrested at his home on Jacobs Avenue in Camden on Thursday evening. Tatro was indicted this week by a Waldo County grand jury. In addition to the multiple counts of gross sexual assault, Tatro was also indicted on one count of unlawful sexual contact and sexual exploitation of a minor.

Investigators say the victims in the case are two teenage girls.

Tatro was the coach for the Islesboro school system for two years until he was dismissed over the summer. Police say he moved to Camden and began coaching privately in Knox County.

BOSTON (AP) - Al Jefferson had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Charlotte Bobcats to an 89-83 win over Boston on Wednesday night, snapping the Celtics' four-game winning streak.

Gerald Henderson had 13 points, Jeff Taylor 12 and Anthony Tolliver had 11 for Charlotte, which ended a two-game skid.

Jeff Green paced Boston with 19 points and Jordan Crawford had 16 points and six assists.

Both teams were without key big men. Celtics' forward Jared Sullinger was out with a bruised right knee and Bobcats' forward Josh McRoberts missed the game for personal reasons. He's expected to play Friday when Charlotte is at Cleveland.
