Maine Credit Unions honor 10th anniversary of 9/11 with largest-ever donation to local heroes

 

‘People Remembering & Helping People’ was the theme for the Tenth Anniversary 9/11 tribute by Maine’s credit unions to the five Red Cross Chapters of Maine.  At the ceremony, Maine’s credit unions honored and remembered the victims of 9/11 and their families.  Also receiving recognition were the organizations that work each day to protect the health and safety of Maine people, as checks were also presented to the Emergency Food Relief Fund of each Red Cross Chapter.  In addition, as part of the continued effort of Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger, a donation was made to a food pantry located in each chapter.  Since 2001, through the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger, Maine’s credit unions have contributed over $64,110 the Emergency Food Relief Funds of Maine’s Red Cross Chapters in memory of 9/11.

RINES/THOMPSON FUND OFFERS GRANTS TO GREATER PORTLAND AREA NONPROFITS

The Rines/Thompson Charitable Fund, established at the Maine Community Foundation in 2000, supports programs that improve the welfare of citizens in the greater Portland area.

Priority is given to projects that promote community and economic development, cultural enrichment, diversity, neighborhood and urban revitalization, youth, mediation and social services, and capacity building efforts for nonprofit organizations.

The deadline for applications is September 15, 2011. A new online application is available at www.mainecf.org.

Last year, the Rines/Thompson Fund made 37 grants ranging in size from $2,000 to the maximum award amount of $5,000.

All Shelters Closed from Tropical Storm Irene

All shelters in the State of Maine that were opened to assist the public during Tropical Storm Irene and its aftermath have now been closed.

15 shelters were opened in response to the storm, and another 17 were on standby prepared to open. American Red Cross chapters in Maine opened and staffed regional shelters in several locations in coordination with county and local officials. Additional locations were opened and run by local communities.

The shelter effort was supported by County Animal Response Teams that were mobilized to care for pets who accompanied their owners to shelters.
