MPA Football Committee decides on championships

AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The Maine Principals' Association football committee met in Augusta today to finalize Championship plans for the new four class system which will begin with the 2013 football season.

As NEWS CENTER reported earlier, the proposal on the table was to hold one championship game at Morse Field, Alfond Stadium at The University of Maine in Orono on Friday night and three games at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland on Saturday. Those plans were approved by the committee Tuesday.

The 2013 Class B Championship will be held Friday night, November 22 at Morse Field. Classes A, C and D will take place Saturday November 23 at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. The committee also finalized the plan to rotate the Class B, C and D games in Orono over three years and keep the Class A game in Portland.

Howland native has his day at the Sprint Cup

INDIANAPOLIS (NEWS CENTER) - After making it a routine to save lives in and out of his Marine service, the good deeds of a Howland native brought about some big rewards this weekend: as in the Samuel Deeds 400 at the Brickyard.

Along with the historic link to the race, he dropped the green flag during qualifying, rode in the pace car, and met drivers, crew chiefs, and owners galore.

He also got to kiss the bricks with the race winner, Indiana native Ryan Newman, who won the coveted checkered flag at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the first time in his career.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s #88 team suffered an early setback having to put just 13 laps in for a loose wheel.  The team, led by crew chief and Cornish native Steve Letarte, rallied to sixth place finish.
