No Longer a Safe Driver. What Should You Do?

No Longer a Safe Driver. What Should You Do?

Even when it was becoming clear that my 83-year-0ld mother should no longer be driving because she seemed increasingly confused, I waffled. Her doctor said she should give it up because she was having memory problems and her reaction time was slower than normal. I still hesitated. It was the one thing she enjoyed more than anything else — she loved driving aimlessly through neighborhoods and down country roads. Every yard sale along the way beckoned to her and she would often return with a trunkful of treasures. Her car was her refuge, a place of solitude and an escape from worry and stress. I just hated to take that away from her.

Equestrian Open Barn Day

Equestrian Open Barn Day

Maine’s Inaugural Equestrian Open Barn Day will be held on Sunday, May 27th.  Barns all over the State are participating! The list of barns participating has been published in print and online at The Horse’s Maine, Maine’s equestrian newspaper, see below.

Each participating equestrian barn has determined its own program for the day. Possibilities include demo lessons, riding demos, pony (and horse!) petting, refreshments, meeting the equine residents, and other original ideas. It is a day for families who would enjoy visiting with the horses to get out and meet them, or individuals who are interested in riding lessons, boarding or training to check out the different stables in their area. Local barns are looking forward to their visits.

Maine Equestrian Open Barn Day is for everyone. Don’t know a thing about horses? This is the day to find out!

ROCKLAND, Maine—Passion of place is what the Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Show is all about. The best of Maine from across the creative spectrum will be gathered together at the 10th annual show on the Rockland waterfront, August 10-12, 2012. Beautiful boats, unique handcrafted products, and an eclectic mix of high-quality goods for life on the water and the shore will again be on display at Maine’s only in-the-water boat show and coastal lifestyle event.

“I’ve always thought of the show as a tremendous party where the most creative folks on the coast share what they do with customers and other exhibitors.

Duck dwelling moved!

Duck dwelling moved!

We have moved the ducks to the front yard!  They were spending all their time there anyway and I had to chase them back to their duck house each night.  That got tedious so I decided to move their housing out front under our apple tree.  There is a culvert nearby that has a slow but steady trickle and so I dug out a small "pond" there!  It is very small, only about 2 feet long and 6 inches deep but it's working well for them, plus I don't have to carry water to them!  They go in each night on their own now which is perfect!  All I have to do is close them up.  They wander pretty far afield but always seem to manage to find their way home.  They also are sociable with our laying hens, spending time near the chicken coop.  The chickens are separated by a hoop house so they can't mix but I've read you can keep ducks and chickens together.  We'll see!
