Fourth Annual Hancock County Food Drive
Events

The Fourth Annual Hancock County Food Drive kicks off Saturday, February 28th and it comes at a very opportune time.

More than forty-four percent of Hancock County children qualified for reduced school lunches in 2014 but hunger doesn’t go away at the end of the school day.  Those children often go to bed hungry and spend the weekend that way. Fifteen percent of all Maine households lack access to nutritious food.  During the winter that number goes even higher as Mainers struggle to pay for heating their homes. The prolonged periods of frigid temperatures, rising fuel prices and the number of storms have combined to make it even more difficult this year. That creates an extra strain on local food pantries and community meal sites which have seen their numbers swell in recent months.

The Hancock County Food Drive runs the entire month of March. This year’s goal is 15,000 items. There is an added bonus! The Maine Community Foundation and United Way of Eastern Maine have once again pledged a one dollar match for every food item donated up to $10,000 dollars. All the food and money will be divided between the food pantries and community meal sites.

You can help by making a monetary donation at www.unitedwayem.org and click on the “Donate Now” button. Checks can be made out to United Way of Eastern Maine with Hancock Food Drive on the memo line. They should be sent to 24 Springer Drive suite 201 Bangor, Maine 04401. Donations of food can be dropped off at sites all over Hancock County. For more information please call Marjorie Peronto at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension office at 667-8212.
