UNITED WAY OF YORK COUNTY STRENGTHENS COMMUNITY EFFORT BEHIND ANNUAL SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE

Joins Statewide “Tools for School” Campaign to Provide 500 Students in Southern Maine with Backpacks Stocked with Notebooks, Calculators, Rulers and More!

July 13, 2011 - KENNEBUNK, ME.  As children and adults throughout Maine enjoy a well deserved summer vacation, the United Way of York County and several community partners are thinking ahead to make sure that children enter the new school year ready to learn, equipped with the tools they need to succeed, by joining a statewide effort to provide donated items such as backpacks, calculators, pens, pencils, rulers and composition notebooks to children unable to afford them.

“One of our primary goals at United Way is to create and support efforts that help children and youth meet academic milestones and graduate on time,” says Kathryn Davis, President and CEO of United Way of York County. “We are excited to join forces with other nonprofits and the ‘Tools for School’ campaign to help get these children off on the right foot in September.”

United Way, working together with Joyful Harvest Neighborhood Center, the In-a-Pinch Non Food Pantry, Open Hands Open Hearts, the Jean Davis Food Pantry and York County Community Action Corporation, plans to provide school supplies to more than 500 children in need in Arundel, Biddeford, Dayton, Old Orchard Beach and Saco schools. Ruth’s Reusable Resources, a non-profit organization that provides students with much-needed school supplies throughout the year by transferring surplus business supplies and merchandise to disadvantaged classrooms, will provide logistical support, supplies and other resources for the effort.

This year, the ‘Tools for School’ program plans to provide more than 3,000 backpacks, filled with age/grade appropriate supplies such as crayons, markers, binders, rulers and notebooks, throughout Maine. In York County, donation boxes are now located at more than 40 local businesses and will be accepting donated items throughout July.

Additionally, United Way of York County and its partners will also be coordinating events at local retailers so that individuals can purchase and then donate items at the same location. The first event is scheduled for this Saturday, July 16th @ Big Lots in Biddeford (420 Alfred Street) from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.
