Social Media Monday - If I Knew Then What I Know Now


For those that know me personally or follow me online you know that I am extremely passionate about incorporating social media in both my personal and business life.  I started my social media adventure in August - 2008 with no plan, no education and no idea how it was going to interact with the rest of my life.  I am very happy to say that it was the best move I could have made.  At this point I wouldn't change anything because of all the great things social media has brought into my world.  For those just getting started I have a few suggestions -

If I were to start my profile and business page in Facebook today I would do the following -

Personal Profile -

  • Categorize my friends/family and sphere from the beginning.  In Facebook, you are able to send specific messages to specific groups as to keep your content relevant to the folks you are sending it to.  For example,  I am a real estate agent.  I would not send Maine specific real estate related posts to my family in Texas however I would send my broker luncheon notifications to brokers, friends, family and sphere in the specific area that I am holding the luncheon.   By having "lists" this could be easily accomplished.
  • I wouldn't like every page that was put in front of me.  I now have 1700 pages - not even sure what half of them are.
  • I would not connect all my social media platforms so my Twitter posts go to Facebook etc.  Every platform has a specific audience and those audiences are very different.
  • When deciding on my Facebook profile name I would think long term and not short term.  For example, my profile name is RealtorTiffanySouthernMaine.  Now what if I decided to get out of real estate or what if I moved and started real estate somewhere else.

Facebook Pages -

  • I have been through many many Facebook Pages trying to figure out my niche like many others.  If one is not working for you and you want to try another please do not abandon the page.  I have many pages that I like that no one has posted in since 2009.  If you or your company is connected to this site folks will think you are out of business or not professional.
  • Have a landing page.  This is a place where folks land before they like your page.  It is their first impression of you and your company.
  • Follow the rule - "If the person visiting my site does not have a need for my service what does my site have to offer.  For example, as a real estate agent if I post nothing but real estate data and post related information eventually folks will be bored with me and maybe unlike me.  The goal is to share information that your followers can use.  In my industry the rule of thumb is - "When someone is thinking of real estate you want the first person they think of to be you"
  • Keep my brand universal.  My social media profiles and websites should share the same brand awareness.  It all needs to be cohesive.
