Volunteer Day: Work Hard, Have Fun

Volunteer Day: Work Hard, Have Fun

Join us on May 12 for Spring Cleanup & Volunteer Day. You'll spend the day helping us prepare the campus for opening day and working alongside other friendly, energetic people. We'll serve you breakfast and lunch, keep you busy with an array of tasks to suit your preferences, and do our best to make it a fun and productive time.

There will be lots of grounds work: raking, grading, preparing plantings, and pruning. Other jobs may include painting and paint prep, moving boats and other heavy objects, and light carpentry. For those who prefer indoor work, there will be cleaning, sweeping, mopping, dusting, windows, and changing light bulbs. Another method of volunteering is to bring a pot-luck lunch selection for our hungry volunteers.

Fire danger very high across the state

AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Maine Forest Service responded to nearly twenty wildfires over the weekend, and with another extended stretch of warm, dry weather upon us, additional fire crews are on stand-by in case more fires break out across the state.

"We've been pulling in a few extra people on their days off to help cover the fire danger," stated Sgt. Gregg Hesslein.  "It is an active fire season, and there is still a ways to go to get through it."

So far this spring, 193 fires have been reported, damaging approximately 270 acres of land.  While rain is in the forecast for the weekend, forest rangers say it will take the trees gaining leaves and the forest floor turning lush and green before the fire danger will diminish.

Chicken Flock Integration - Part 3

Chicken Flock Integration - Part 3

We've done it!  The chicken family is now fully integrated with the laying flock!  The other night we moved their little coop over near the larger coop and then sort of "encouraged" them to move over to the bigger one!  They did this with a little bit of protesting but once they were safe inside the bigger coop I closed it up and removed the smaller coop entirely.  I then imediately turned off the light in the big coop so the laying hens couldn't see the chicks.  The next morning all the chickens came out of the coop without issue and were well behaved.  The next night the chicks and mom went right into the larger coop, no questions asked!  Yahoo!  We've done it!
